Tour Itinerary & Highlights

Discover the centuries old Jewish Heritage of Istanbul in this day tour.

Ahrida Synagogue
Our Jewish Heritage Istanbul Tour begins with a visit to Istanbul’s oldest and active synagogues; Ahrida. Ahrida synagogue dates back to 15th century and built by Jews of Ohri (Macedonia) more than 550 years ago and recently renovated during the Quincentennial Celebrations in 1992, the Ahrida Synagogue is known foremost by its boat-shaped bimah.
Balat: an old Jewish Neighborhood
After visiting Ahrida synagogue we keep exploring the colorful streets of Balat. Balat was a populated Jewish neighborhood for centuries. You will see the old Jewish houses. Balat is a popular neighborhood with traditional, colorful, old houses, small local businesses, boutiques, stylish cafes and friendly locals.
Karakoy & Galata
We then make our way to Karakoy taking a ride along the southern coastline of the Golden Horn. Karakoy is one of the oldest parts of Istanbul. Known for sea trade for centuries. We continue with finucular up to to Galata quarter.
Neva Shalom Synagogue & Jewish Heritage Museum
In Galata, we visit Istanbul’s biggest synagogue Neva Shalom. Today, Neva Shalom synagogue houses the Jewish Heritage Museum of Istanbul. The Quincentennial Jewish Heritage Museum is an excellent representation of the history of Jews in Istanbul and Anatolia. The museum also has an ethnography section where local traditional costumes are displayed.
Ashkenaz Synagogue
Next we will explore the beautiful scenery of Istanbul from a rooftop cafe. You wil learn more about Jewish heritage of Istanbul from you guide while sipping your Turkish tea or Turkish coffee. After taking some memorable pictures of your Istanbul experience we continute to Ashkenazi Synagogue. Ashkenazi Synagogue was established in 1900 for Jewish immigrants coming from Macedonia and Poland.
Schneider's Temple & Kamondo Stairs
Following our visit to Ashkenazi Synagogue we continue to Schnedier’s Temple. In 19th century Ottoman Istanbul most of the Ashkenazi Jews were tailors. The synagogue was funded and opened by the Union of Ashkenazi Tailors (Tofre Begadim) on 8th of September 1894. Schneiders’s Temple serves as an art gallery today. Our final spot is the famous Kamondo Stairs. Kamondo Stairs were built by banker Avram Kamondo to connect Bankers street to Banker road. Kamondo Stairs is a small gem reflecting the Art Nouveau style of its time.
