More than just a quintessential border town, Edirne is one of the best preserved Ottoman cities and makes an impressive and easily digestible introduction to Turkey. The city enters history as Hadrianopolis (meaning the city of Hadrian) designated as the main centre of Roman Thrace by the emperor Hadrian. Under the Byzantines it retained its significance, not at least as a forward base en route to the Balkans or more ominously from the Byzantine point of view, first stop on the way to attempts on their imperial capital itself.
Once home to the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and still home to some of the most beautiful examples of Ottoman architecture from the 14th and 15 century and the current capital of the Edirne Province, the Turkish city Edirne lays near to the borders between Turkey and Bulgaria and Greece.
Due to its important location, Edirne offers visitors not just rich history and fine examples of civil architecture, but also it is a perfect location to discover the locals of the European side of Turkey. This tour can be combined with Ottoman Heritage Tour of Istanbul. Edirne’s local delicacies are worth a try.
